After winning the BB&O Girls Championship Katherine O’Connor maintained her form to win the Oxfordshire Championship title at Studley Wood.
After having to settle for second place in Tuesday’s 36 hole stroke play Qualifying competition at Studley being 3 shots behind Frilford’s Jane Binning who shot a morning round of gross 76 and a 77 in the afternoon.
Katherine went on to stamp her authority on the match play knock rounds, working her way through 2 rounds on Wednesday to meet Sarah Amos playing on her home turf in the semis to win 3/2.
After beating Sarah in the semis, Katherine met Burford’s Nicola Sparks in the final. Nicola played Huntercombe’s Alison Kelly in the semis and won 2/1, who always features on the last day of the Championship but has yet to lift the silverware.
FINAL – After pulling her first tee shot and subsequently losing the hole Katherine settled down to level the match by the 4th and by the 7th was 3 up. Nicola eagled Studley’s par 5 9th to cut the deficit to two, and she also won the 10th. However, Nicola’s putting was a little shaky on the 11th and took 3 putts to Katherine’s 2 for a par which took Nicola back to 2 down. The 12th was halved but Nicola pulled her tee shot on the 13th, whereas Katherine was on the green in 2 to win the hole with a 4 to go 3 up but Katherine lost the next hole after being on the green in regulation and 3 putting. Katherine then went on to birdie the par 4 15th to go dormy 3,
Leaving Nicola needing a win to keep the match alive but they both shot 3’s on the short 16th, to give Katherine a 3/2 victory for the Championship title.
