MID-SILVER CHAMPIONSHIP at TADMARTON HEATH GCA Mid-Silver championship for handicaps 12 to 20 was held for the first time this year alongside the main County Championship. It proved very popular and attracted a large entry. The competition comprised 18 hole medal qualifier with the top 8 going through to match play knock out rounds.Thelma Mawle playing on her home turf took the honours in the Qualifying Round shooting a gross 83 off her 12 handicap and Frilford Heath’s Jean Lees (12) just pipped club mate Sue Russell (12) in to second place on count back with a gross 86. The other qualifiers were:Clare Fox (14) Oxford Ladies; Iona Smith (13) Friflord Heath; Maggie Edwards (14) Oxford Ladies; Maureen McInnes (13) Tadmarton and Pam Mathews (14 Frilford Heath. On the Qualifying Day Handicap prizes were won by Sue Russell with a nett 74 with Tadmarton’s Jane Hackett (18) coming second with a nett 75. The quarter finals were played on Friday and Jean Lees (Frilford) defeated Maureen McInnes (Tadmarton), Thelma Mawle (Tadmarton) beat Pam Mathews (Frilford) with another Frilford player Iona Smith loosing to Clare Fox from Oxford Ladies. The last match also featured another Frilford player Sue Russell who claimed her place in the semis by beating Maggie Edwards. The two Frilford players Jean Lees & Sue Russell came up against each other in the semis with Jean just missing out and Thelma Mawle played Clare Fox in the other semi and lost. The Final was between Sue Russell and Clare Fox on Saturday afternoon with Clare stamping her authority on the match and winning the mid-silver trophy.
