Oxfordshire Second Team Win Inter-County League

Oxfordshire Second Squad have had a tremendous season of matches which culminated in them lifting the trophy for the newly formed Midlands South Second Team League.

After beating Berkshire on their home territory at Maidenhead GC 6 matches to 3, The seconds went on to meet Buckinghamshire at Ellesborough and only lost one of the 3 morning foursomes and with 3 singles wins in the afternoon it was enough to clinch the overall match by 5 / 4.

Oxon were then on home territory at Chipping Norton for their match against Warwickshire. They won two of the morning foursomes matches but only managed to put 2 ½ points on the board from the afternoon singles but it resulted in a halved match 4 ½ to 4 ½ .

They then travelled to Moseley GC last week to play their final match in the series against Worcestershire & Herefordshire knowing that a halved match would win the newly formed League and the trophy.

In the morning foursomes Kate Evans (Frilford) and Abi Laker (Burford) put in a stirling performance being 1 under par after 8 holes, and finishing the match 4/3. Karen Pollard (Henley) & Lydia Fox (Studley) whilst managing to square the match at the turn they were dealt a crushing blow when the opponents holed a 35ft putt on the 15th and the opposition went on to win the match on the 17th. Annie Gowing (Frilford) and Laura Watkins (Bicester) gave a very determined performance against a strong Worcestershire/Herefordshire pairing and their win on the 17th gave Oxfordshire a 2 – 1 lead going into the afternoon’s singles.

The singles started in torrential rain with not much respite throughout the afternoon.
Fifteen year old Abi had the honour of being first off the tee for the singles and she stamped her authority on the match from the start and put the first point on the score sheet with a 3/2 win.

Worcestershire & Herefordshire fought back but Oxon’s middle order stood firm and Laura Watkins and Lydia Fox turned round deficits to win their matches 1 up and 2/1 respectively. After being 2 down 15 year old Gemma Clements from Studley also turned her match round to finish all square. Overall match result a win for Oxfordshire 5 ½ to 3 ½ .
