Morning Foursomes

What a difference a day makes!
After three consecutive close matches but not getting a result, I’m so thrilled to report on a very comfortable victory. I say comfortable because the golf today was awesome. The morning kicked off with a team chat from John Cook before the team headed off to the first tee. The target was to win every match and in the morning foursomes we nearly achieved our goal. The first pairing of Katherine O’Connor and Jane Binning produced wonderful consistent golf and the pairing cruised to an easy victory of 6 &5. The next pairing was Lauren Jupp & Narelle Ives and what an exciting game this was to watch. The match went down the last with Oxfordshire trailing one down, however Lauren and Narelle were so determined to get something out of the match, they made a solid par down the last after their opponents found water and secured the half. Third to play was Annie Gowing and Laura Watkins. This was Laura’s first match due to a shoulder injury that she picked up just ahead of County Week. Laura was so keen to play that she was determined not to let the injury prevent her making her debut this week. What a debut it was, with a comfortable victory of 2up. So the team went into lunch very happy and confident with their 2 ˝ to ˝ point lead.

Afternoon Singles

Samantha Round led the way again as County Champion and produced flawless golf with a comfortable 4 &3 victory. In the second match, Jane Binning again demonstrated great golf and remained ahead in her match throughout also beating her opponent by 4 &3. Tilly Holder was third out in the singles and unfortunately lost 3 & 2. Next to follow was Lauren and after being 2 down with three to play, produced really exciting golf on the 16th and 17th holes to bring the match back to all square down the last. The notorious 18th proved fateful however, with Lauren hitting her tee shot over the wall on the right and therefore losing out by just one hole. The team knew that one more victory would give them their first win of the week, and the ever reliable Katherine O’Connor produced the goods with again a wonderful display of super golf. Katherine’s match finished on the 15th hole with a 4 & 3 victory and therefore giving Oxfordshire their first Match Point on the board. Last out was Annie Gowing and on this occasion Annie couldn’t quite get a result from her match and lost 4 & 3. I’m delighted that the team produced a great solid performance which they thoroughly deserved! We’re now looking forward to another good result against Berkshire tomorrow and a strong finish to the week.
