Result Oxfordshire win 5 1/2 matches to 3 1/2

We went into our final match of the season knowing that a half would be enough to win the league.

The morning foursomes saw Kate Evans & Abi Laker put in a stunning performance being 1 under par after 8 holes followed by birdies at the 13th and 14th holes. The experience and steadiness of Kate blended perfectly with Abi’s awesome ball striking. Both players strong short-games shone through which gave them a 4&3 win posting the first points of the day for Oxon. Karen & Lydia steadied themselves on the second 9 managing to pull back to all-square. A 35 foot putt holed by W&H on the 15th was a crushing blow and Karen & Lydia eventually succumbed on the 17th. Annie & Laura once again put in a classy performance against a strong W&H pairing. Their win on the 17th gave Oxon a 2-1 lead going into the afternoon singles.

The singles started in torrential rain with not much respite through the afternoon. Abi Laker (15 years old) had the honour of playing number one having been cut to 3.9 the previous weekend! Abi showed no nerves and continued with masterful play winning 3&2 – it was a joy to watch. There were nail biting moments - at one point we were up in 1 and down in 5 matches. However a strong fight-back from our middle order saw Lydia Fox and Laura Watkins both turning around deficits to win their matches. Gemma Clements (15 years old) fought back from being 2 down to halving on the 18th.

The win crowned Oxfordshire as the winners of the inaugural Midlands South 2nd Team League and we remain undefeated for the 3rd year running!.

Many congratulations to all the 2nd team who have played in matches this season - all their hard work and training sessions have certainly paid off.

Thank you to the afternoon caddies – Jayne and John Laurie, Chris Reeves and Sally Adams.
