Mid-Silver final 2019

Sue Stewart, North Oxford v Susie Hogben, Drayton Park

Sue said - It’s unusual for me to play three good rounds in a row so I was surprised but delighted to find myself in the mid-silver final. The beautiful course at Henley was playing well and initially it was easy to focus on the enjoyment of playing the course rather than the scary fact that this was a final.

I was fortunate to get off to a good start, I even managed to par the second, and found myself 2 up after 9. I knew I had to stay focused knowing that Susie had made a late charge on the back 9 to win her semi-final that morning and, as we all know, anything can happen in golf.

Again I started the back 9 well and was 4 up after the 11th. We halved the 12th and then Susie won the following 3 holes to reduce my lead to one shot after the 15th. Over those holes Susie’s confidence seemed to be growing and she was playing very positively while I became more nervy. I managed to settle my nerves on the 16th and we both landed our drives on the 16th green, fortunately I sank a put for a par to win the hole which meant we were dormy on the 17th tee. The nerves returned and I misfired my drive off to the right behind the trees while Susie hit a beautiful drive to the middle of the fairway but her approach shot caught a bunker and she took 2 out onto the green so much to my relief after my poor drive we were both on in 4.  I managed to finish with a 6 when Susie conceded. It was so exciting to win!

Huge thanks to all my lovely playing partners, Nick, my husband for caddying, Henley Golf Club for hosting and the Oxfordshire Ladies County Golf Association for organizing the championships. It’s been a great experience.
